I seek the wisdom of my Fl*st!
Friends, Romans, Fl*sters, come and gather round as I'm in dire need of your counsel.

To start with I must inform you all of the sad, and possible terminal decline of my beloved Lap Top. Now Last year I may have mentioned it was having trouble switiching it on, then it seemed to sort itself out and things went fine. While I was on holidiay, the problem reared it's ugly little head again.  Which lead to the amusing sight of me caressing the on/off button, as I tired to turn the lap top on (considering what I write, the whole messing with a button to gain a great deal of pleasure is kind of appropiate).

It's still happening, and there are times I fear it won't switch on at all (oh the horror).  Today I trapped our I.T. bod Scott in his office and interrogated about this. He looked at me sympathetically and said "I hate to tell you but it's knackered.  Yes they can bodge a repair, but it just mean shoving bits of plastic under the mother board, which could lead to other issues.  How old is it?"

I snivelled softly and said, "We've been together since 2009, we're very close."  I should say we're close, she's been on 4 holidays with me. Scott whistled, impressed at the longevity of a piece of technolgy owned by me, and said perhaps it was time to consider an uprgade.

Which brings me to my question, do I try and source a windows 7 lap top, or bite the bullet and go for windows 8?  Scott hates windows 8 with a passion, and is steering me towards windows 7.  But my problem is how easy is it to still buy them?  If I can't, can anyone help me to deal with something that is considered almost demonic by out I.T. guy!

Seriously,  I need help (yes I know!) any wise words will be accepted, studied, and treated as if they were holy scripture!

Also if I suddenly vanish then you know the dark day has come to pass........

I wish I could help, but I've never even touched Windows 8, so I have no opinion on it one way or the other at the moment.

I would have thought if you were going to try for the Windows 7 laptop, you would only be able to go down the reconditioned route because I would be very surprised if any retailers still carried Windows 7.

That might be a whole pain in the ass of it's own, so you might be better to just bite the bullet and go for Windows 8. You never know, it might grow on you - like fungus!

I applaud Scott on his technical assessment of your laptop - it's right up there with mine :)

I know deep down Windows 8 is the way forward, but I hate feeling stampeded towards it.

I will learn to work it if it bloody well kills me, now all I have to do is sort out a new laptop.

I'm so glad you and Scott agree with the diagnosis.

I picked up my laptop maybe...a bit over a year now? I asked for it to come with Windows 7, and it did. It also comes with a nifty Windows 8 CD should I decide to "upgrade". I would give Windows 8 a pass, a friend of mine had it on her laptop and it just didn't seem worth the trouble.

Now, the up side that I had was that I got it straight from the manufacturers because my dad is in the IT consulting line and apparently quite frequently orders customised laptops, which means I could get mine fiddled with a good bit. You will have to pay a bit more for any extras that you ask for, even though its technically a downgrade, but I really don't see why it would be difficult. I just did a quick check and apparently its not a commonly offered customisation but I'd say give them a call and ask nicely.

If they say no, Windows 8 is not all that bad, its just a bit like switching from Android to Apple, where you have to confine yourself to their way of doing things because they plain decided that's the way it should be done. Its not awful by any means, just...different and rather unnecessary.

It's typical really, it wasn't broke but Microsoft fixed it. I'll just have to see how it plays out, but the time is coming to say goodbye to my faithful friend *sniff*.

As much as I liked Windows 7 I went to 8 and when the update to that came out it now in a lot of ways acts like Windows 7. You can get used to it pretty easy. I'd just suggest staying away from Dell and HP, I have an Asus that has been through more than a lap top should have to go through and it's still working fine... I got it in 2008 whereas friends that have gone HP or Dell have had issues out the wazzu including the dreaded Dell 7 beeps of death...

Ok that sounds more promising, thank you. I've been looking at an Acer Laptop and it might be the winner *G*.

I ordered my laptop last autumn on Amazon because I wanted Windows 7 and couldn't find a decent appliance in the store.

If you're not sure about Windows 8, maybe you can try it on a friend's computer or in a store, and then decide.

I wanted to try it out today, but the dozy salesman was a nightmare. It looks like it's time to bite the bullet and sorta new laptop. Thanks for the comment.

It's a personal taste thing but I actually prefer my Acer Goggle Systems laptop, because no bullshit with Windows updates and downloads and it very rarely screws up on me. Plus simple to use apps instead of programs.

*HUGS* I hope it holds out, cos believe me I know what it's like to be left in the dark computer wise!

Thank you for the advice, I'll take a look at them see if they're what I need.

I've got everything crossed this holds up, I'd hate to be without a laptop. My nerves would never take it *G*

I know it's been a while since this post and you may be all sorted by now (still playing catch up) but I'd go for 8. I had 7 on my old laptop and it was great, but since I've gotten used to using 8, it's so much better. It take a little while to find things as they're laid out differently (fuck know why!) but since 9 will be out soon, it's going to be very difficult to buy a new laptop that still has 7 on it. Upgrade to 8.1 straight way though, they made some changes...which made it a little more like 7...crazy but true! lol
