I seek the wisdom of my Fl*st!
Friends,Romans, Fl*sters, before I start bugging you all with comments on your journals. Then finish up a little scribble for Jensen's birthday.  I have a technical question for you all, just before Christmas I brought a new Lap Top.  It's an Acer Aspire E15 Windows 8.1, now we are still getting to know one another. I haven't felt the urge to fling it put of the window (too often) but there is a niggling irritation......

I can't play bloody CDs or DVDs on the ruddy thing! I've tried but so far lots of whirring and then bugger all else. Now, I've heard that I might need another program, to get the microsoft's lovely piece of tech to actually work.

Can you guys help me out here?  Is this true, or am I doing something wrong? I have to admit that this would be a new technical low for me but I'm getting desperate here.......

Right back to Jared, and his little surprise for Jensen's birthday.

I think you should take it back to the store. It should be able to play both right out of the box.

It should and if you upgrade windows 8.1 to windows 8.1 Pro (for the cheap price of £50.00) , it does! I just downloaded VLC, and guess what? It actually plays!

I think microsoft it having a laugh!

I've been wondering what it's caused this kind of problem but glad to hear VLC works for you. I too installed this soft to play mp4 on my old computer(Vista) and still installed on my new one Windows 7. It's amazing how free soft can do lots of staff than paid programming.

That doesn't sound right to me.
I'm no techie, but I thought Microsoft laptops came with the functionality to do that stuff!

Apparently, if you are dumb enough to buy a windows 8.1 (like me) it doesn't support play back. You have to upgrade to 8.1 pro or find another player. I just downloaded VLC and suddenly it's working....a bit odd that.

I'm still on windows 7 - I've heard so much bad about windows 8, I'm dreading having to upgrade!

To be honest, if old faithful hadn't played up I'd still be on windows 7. I'm not exactly fond of windows 8.

It should play them straight out the box hun! Take it back and get it checked! *hugs*

It should, but it seems that 8.1 doesn't support DVD playback. You have to either pay extra to upgrade, or download another DVD player. Crafty sods.

What a crock of *grumps*

Usually on Windows machines I think Microsoft Media Player is installed and you can play stuff straight away. I tend to use VLC Media Player though, which just seems a lot easier to use to me! http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en_GB.html

Thank you for the suggestion, and it seems that 8.1 machines need to be upgraded to support playback!

If you can hear the drive whirring it's obviously reading the discs, but the information isn't getting to the computer. It's a fault. Take it back and ask them to replace it. Then get them to play a disc on the new machine before you leave the store, just in case it's a batch fault.

It seems that windows 8.1 doesn't do DVD playback, you have to download extra softwear!

Thank God I got in at just the right time with both my computers. They run Windows 7 and a wonderful, glitch free creation it is. I absolutely hate everything about Windows 8.

Microsoft have a tradition of launching an excellent OS, followed by a really sucky one: XP, Vista, 7, 8 and the trend continues backwards.

Let's hope Windows 9 is out soon...

Honey, if you Google your laptop model it specifically tells people there is NO CD/DVD DRIVE in the unit. Note: This laptop does not include a built-in DVD/CD drive. I

You can very simply and quite reasonably buy an external drive... click this link for an example

Trust me,there's a CD/DVD Drive in this version! I found out that windows 8.1 doesn't support playing DVD's you have to download extra softwear. I've got it sorted now, thank you.
