Jeff pulled onto his drive, it had been a long hard day and he was ready to rip off his jacket and tie, throw his briefcase in the corner and down a really large glass of whisky. His eyes strayed over to his neighbour’s house. Thank fuck, for once it was quiet. Ever since Mark and Jensen had moved in next door, his once-peaceful neighbourhood had resounded to the sounds of loud arguments and fights.
Jeff had a nasty suspicion that their fights had become more intense than just screaming matches. It was bad enough witnessing Mark humiliate Jensen on a regular basis, coming home drunk, if he came home at all. Then Mark lost his job and the situation became steadily worse, and Jeff was sure Mark had escalated from verbal and mental abuse to physical violence but whenever he tried to speak to Jensen about it all he got was “I’m just clumsy,” or another old favourite “I had an accident at the gym.”
But for once the house was silent, the lights were on and Jeff sighed. Perhaps Mark and Jensen were having a cosy evening in front of the T.V which was what he should be doing right about now. Jeff got out of the car and shivered, it was freezing. Jeff huddled down in his coat and he paused as he fished his keys from his pocket.
As he approached Jensen looked up. Even under the street light Jeff could see how pale Jensen was and the dark tinge to his lips. Without thinking, Jeff grabbed Jensen and pulled him to his feet. Jensen weaved drunkenly in Jeff’s arms, “Come on, we got to get you warmed up.” Jeff pulled the other man close to him and walked him over to his front door. Jeff wrestled with his keys as he tried to keep Jensen on his feet, his head was drooping forward and Jeff was trying to get him to talk.
“What did you think of the game last night, Jen? Come on, Jen. I need to know you’re with me; please, come on. You’re scaring the crap out of me here. I’m just old enough for a heart attack. You don’t want to do that to me, do you?” Jeff let out a whoop of triumph as the door swung open and he manhandled Jensen through it.
Jensen hadn’t moved; he was looking round the room in confusion, “How did I get here?” the words were hard to understand due his teeth chattering and how hard he was shivering.
“I found you on your doorstep. Have you locked yourself out?” Jeff was stripping his coat off Jensen and was replacing it with one of the blankets. Jeff gently took hold of Jensen by the shoulders and he guided the shivering man to the couch. “Sit down, Jensen. We need to get you warm.” Jeff then wrapped his legs and feet in the other blanket. Jeff tried hard to ignore the bruises he could see on Jensen’s legs and arms, a multi-coloured reminder of Mark’s presence in Jensen’s life.
Jensen was shivering violently now, Jeff took that as a good sign. It meant he was starting to warm up a little, he could see that Jensen was crying. Without thought Jeff got up beside the other man and wrapped his arms round him and pulled him close to his chest. “Please Jensen, tell me you locked yourself out and that asshole isn’t sitting in your lounge while you were freezing to death.” Jensen’s head rested against Jeff’s chest.
“You think I’m worth more than Mark?” the voice was small, almost pleading. Jeff licked his lips and tightened his hold on Jensen.
Jensen yawned and leant back into Jeff’s arms. Jeff stilled as he felt Jensen slowly relax, his breathing evened out and the shivers that had wracked his body had slowed a little and when Jeff touched Jensen’s cheek it no longer felt like ice. The pale-blue tint to his lips was fading and his freckles were no longer so stark against his pale complexion.
Jeff relaxed and allowed himself to enjoy the feel of Jensen in his arms. He breathed in the scent of his shampoo and Jeff laid himself and Jensen down on the couch, letting his body warm Jensen’s.
Jeff was jerked awake by pounding on the door. He blinked drowsily and looked at his watch. Fuck! It was four o’clock in the morning. Jeff considered ignoring the banging but the noise was causing Jensen to stir in his sleep. Jeff eased himself away from the sleeping man, once more gently touching his cheek. He was relieved to find Jensen had warmed up. Jeff stood up muttering “Alright, I’m up. Just hang on.” Jeff neared the door and he recognized the figure silhouetted in the doorway.
“Ahh, fuck it.” Before he opened the door Jeff grabbed something from his coat. He took a deep breath and opened the door.
“Evening Mark, can I help you with something?” Jeff gave the blonde man an easy smile.
Mark’s face was dark with anger and he kept trying to see over Jeff’s shoulder to see if he could spot Jensen. “Hi Jeff. I believe you have something of mine in there.” The voice was tight with tension although Mark was trying to keep it light.
“No. I don’t think I’ve borrowed anything of yours, what did you lose?” Jeff blocked Mark’s attempts to see into his home, his own smile broadening. If he wanted Jensen he would have to ask properly.
Mark gritted his teeth, “Oh, you know. I seem to have mislaid my boyfriend. Silly boy got locked out earlier and I was worried about him.”
Jeff nodded “Oh, you mean after you threw him out of his home when he finally told you to fuck off? I haven’t seen him but I’m sure he’s alright.” Jeff’s stance changed when he saw Mark straighten up. Jeff was pretty sure Mark could kill him if he wanted to, but he was certain nobody ever stood in his way.
Mark’s eyes narrowed but his tone remained pleasant “Now look, we don’t have to get nasty over this. You just hand him over and I’ll be on my way. Or if you like we could share him. He’s a good boy, always does as he’s told.” A smirk played across Mark’s lips.
Jeff saw red at that offer; he stepped over the threshold pulling the door behind him. Still keeping the smile on his face he spun Mark round and slammed him hard into the wall, putting his arm across his throat. From his back pocket he retrieved the item from his coat and brought it up level with Mark’s eyes.
His eyes widened when he took in what it was “You...you’re a fucking fed? Oh come on! No way, man.”
Jeff leaned harder against Mark “Well, we’re not all Bruce Willis, but yes that’s what the badge says. Now why don’t you be a good boy and do as Jensen asked and get the Hell out of his life.”
“Why? What are you gonna do about it if I don’t? I mean, that’s one sweet ass and he looks real good too. I’m set up here for life. All I have to do is say ‘I’m sorry, sweetheart, I won’t do it again’, take him to the movies and play nice for a little while.” Mark’s voice was barely a whisper due to the pressure Jeff was putting on his neck.
Jeff shook his head, put his mouth next to his ear and spoke “Well, for a start I can go through every aspect of your life, and then make it a living Hell. I’m betting that if I look hard enough I’ll find an arrest record or maybe a conviction. After that I’m pretty sure there is something I can use....your choice, Mark. Oh and you ever hurt Jensen like that again I will put a bullet in your brain and blame a local drug dealer.” Jeff pushed away from the other man, the same easy smile still in place. Mark stepped forward; Jeff resisted the urge to back away.
Jeff clenched his fists at that, took a deep breath and opened his front door. Stepping back inside he looked over at the couch to Jensen, and it seemed he hadn’t stirred. Jeff walked over and looked down at the sleeping man, his colour had improved and Jeff knelt down by him.
He fought the urge to just lean over and kiss those full lips; he’d just gotten rid of one asshole. Jeff didn’t need to come on to him when he was vulnerable. “Fed, my ass!” Jeff let out a shout, tumbling backwards as Jensen spoke. Jensen struggled into a sitting position, the blanket pulled tight round him. Jeff thought he looked adorable with his hair sticking up, and the way he was rubbing at his eyes, muttering as he did it, “I finally thought I’d found a good guy and he’s as big a liar as Mark.”
“Whoa, what did you just say?” Jeff bounced back onto his knees, placing his hands on Jensen’s legs. Jensen looked away, pulling the blanket tighter.
“Look! I saw you in the office today talking to my boss. You’re an I.T. consultant, you’re no Fed.” Jensen was trying to stand up but he was entangled in the blanket and was failing miserably.
Jeff couldn’t help the laugh he gave “Look! Sit back down before you fall down; you have had a lucky escape, Jensen. You were hypothermic and don’t deny it. Oh and the bruises...no way are those gym accidents. I’ll explain if you’ll let me, please?”
Jensen looked at him warily and settled back down; Jeff patted his knee “May I?” he nodded to the empty space on the couch. Jensen shifted up a little by way of an invitation.
“So where do I start? Ok, you’re right, I’m not a Fed. Well, I don’t bust down doors but my company busts down firewalls. We provide security for networks and we do that by hacking systems and exposing weaknesses. I do work for the F.B.I. as a consultant and I know quite a few agents.”
“So where did the badge come from then? And what you said to Mark. I heard that.”
Jeff blushed at that, “You got up then?” It was Jensen’s turn to blush, his fingers picked at the blanket. Jeff licked his lips and continued in a sheepish tone of voice. “I... well it seems I might have mentioned you once or twice to one of the agents I work with.”
In fact, according to Kane, it was more a case of “If you mention green eyes, freckles and he shouldn’t be allowed to wash his car in tight T-Shirts once more, I swear I will shoot you.” After that Jeff had told Kane all about Jensen and his problems.
“The agent in question offered me some assistance in the form of a spare badge and some tips on how to threaten people. I was hoping never to have to use either but it did come in handy tonight, I’m sorry, Jensen, it was none of my business but I couldn’t stand by and watch him keep hurting you.”
Jensen lifted his head and fixed Jeff with those eyes that had pinned him to the spot the first time he’d seen them. “Am I really worth all that trouble?”
“I know it was just hard to let go, you know. I’ve known for a long time it was over but with us but moving to a new place I just kept hoping.” Jensen went quiet and he looked thoughtfully at Jeff, “Actually, why were you at my office today? As far as I know the network is fine.”
Jeff thought for a moment “Well, as far as your boss is concerned my company has just swept your network for bugs and viruses. The real reason I was there was to confirm an I.P. address. My team and I have been tracking one particular hacker for a couple of years now. He’s brilliant, a ghost, you only ever find out where he’s been long after the event, and the kicker is he never does any damage. Hell, he even improves the systems he hacks, tightens security, improves how it runs and then moves on, ensuring no one can get in the way he did. It’s just that recently he’s made a few mistakes, left a few bread crumbs for us to follow. We all wondered what had happened to make him careless. We’ve gotten kind of fond of him and we worried. This blip happened around six months ago and we’ve been closing ever since. You know I couldn’t believe it when I found out the man I’ve hunted for two years had moved in next door to me. Talk about the universe having a sense of humor.” Jensen stiffened when he heard this and he shrunk further down into the blankets.
Jensen stared at the other man “You’re not going to arrest me?”
Jeff shook his head “I told you I’m not a Fed and I think I would rather have you working with me than getting into trouble on your own. We know you’ve never taken any money, your bank records prove that. Besides, Kane will kill me if he never gets to meet you, after all the trouble he went to. So what do you say? A new job and a fresh start? You’ll like Kane once you get over his habit of scaring the crap out of everyone.”
“I don’t suppose there’s any chance of a new man as well?” Jensen’s voice was hesitant as he looked at Jeff timidly.
Jeff couldn’t help the goofy grin he knew had broken out on his face. “Oh God! You have no idea how much I’d like that, but I would like us to go slow.”
Jeff watched as the hopeful light died in Jensen’s eyes as he looked away. Jeff moved closer to the other man “I meant... how about we go out for a drink sometime?”
A shy smile appeared on Jensen’s face “I’d like that. How about that hot chocolate you promised me?” A blush stole over him as he spoke.
“How long can I stay for Jeff?”
