The One That Got Away. (1/1) Pg-13, Sam and Dean Winchester

Title: The One That Got Away.
Word Count:  850.
Rating: PG-13
Summary: A reaper watches over her latest victim, and wishes that sometimes the rules could be broken.
Pairing: None.
Disclaimer: Sadly none of this belongs to me, although I’m getting real friendly with the cross roads demon, he still won’t let me near the brothers Winchester.  I even promised to put them back the way I found them (you know gorgeous), I’m only playing with god’s...sorry Kripke’s lovely creations.
Notes:   I wrote this for the dean_sam  theme week for the episode IMTOD, and I must apologise in advance.  This is unbeta’d, as my long suffering and wonderful beta bigj52  is on holiday.  I hope she forgives me for sneaking this out, but I wanted to post this before the theme closed.

My name is Tessa. and I’m here to do my job, this hospital is my sand box. I have no strong emotions concerning those I meet, whose lives I end. I reap that’s my purpose; I can’t afford to feel for the ones who are left behind. They mourn and grief fills their lives for a time and then they move on.  It’s the natural order of things, the flow of life into death and what happens beyond death? Don’t ask me, that’s way beyond my pay grade to tell you.

I’m here to reap a hunter, it’s not uncommon, I’ve come for more hunters than I care to remember.  Their lives tend to be short and their ends violent.  But this particular hunter Dean Winchester, there is something about him.  He has the way of a warrior about him, he reminds me of a knight, one whose amour is a battered leather jacket, and a smile.

I’ve followed him throughout the hospital, I watched as he tried to help that nurse. I saw the helplessness as she slipped away, pain clear in his eyes.  He knows he himself is being hunted, and he is trying so hard to stay one step ahead of me.  But no one can out run death, you can only delay the inevitable. After he grabbed me when I came to claim him once before, I’ve taken to watching him, to see what could convince Dean to come with me.

I’ve seen his father by his bed, a man whose soul has been battered by both grief and anger.  Almost as much as his body was battered by the demon, and the truck that hit their precious car.

Then there is Sam, the youngest member of the Winchester family. And the main reason that Dean is fighting so hard to remain here, family is everything to Dean.  He wants his father to be proud of him, to live up to the high standards John has set.  To be the hunter, his father forged from the flames of his grief.

But the one who makes Dean whole is his brother, his Sammy.  I sat on Dean’s bed, and I watched two young men communicate through an Ouija board.  There was so much love there, and although they talked of hunts and reapers, that love was unspoken but I saw how it filled the room.  More than anything I see a bond so strong, that Dean is prepared to fight death not to lose it.

It’s time for me to leave, I feel as if I’m intruding on a private moment. It surprises me that I feel so strongly, I have seen this kind of devotion between brothers before, and sometimes it touches even a reaper, to have break that strong a bond.  I know that the world will be a darker place without Dean, the glue that has held this fractured family together.  A warrior pulled from the battlefield in the war against evil.

As I leave I turn back to take one final look at the brothers, I feel the fierce desperation that pours from Sam, determined to do whatever it takes to save his brother.  I look at Dean and in his eyes burns a love that takes the breath away, his life has been filled with duty, pain and sacrifice.  But I know Dean will fight, he’ll battle with every last ounce of his strength, to stay here with his family.  For Dean there is no other option, there can be no surrender, this is a battle he has to win.

All I can do is to offer to relieve him of the burdens he carries, the hopes and expectations of a father who raised a warrior first, and son second.  To the care of a younger brother, to whom he was more of a father than brother at times.  I know in my heart Dean will never willingly lay down his burden, it’s who Dean is.  Although he will never admit it, his world is ruled by love. The love he has for his brother and for his father.

I know that Sam returns those feelings, I heard Sam plead with Dean not to go as they were just becoming brothers again.  But Sam is wrong, they never stopped being brothers, it didn’t matter that he was at Stanford.  As far as Dean was concerned Sam was always with him, and he never stopped being Sam’s big brother.

Once again I must tear a family apart, but I can’t be weak it’s my job after all. I’ve spoken to Dean and it seems that at last he is willing to come with me.  I’m a reaper, and it doesn’t matter that just this once I’d like to see one get away. I too have no choice, it’s Dean’s time to die and there is nothing upon this earth that can stop it.....What’s that sound? No it can’t be, it’s not allowed!  As the smoke engulfs me my final thought is he’s going to get away and for once I don’t mind.
